Have you ever asked someone what the shape of the earth is and they gave a ridiculous response?
Okay, maybe that was a bit too extreme. At least everyone should know the shape of the earth. But, many of us do not have as much information about our environment as we should have.In this blog post I will be taking you through a bit of introduction into earth science and I’m certain you would love it.
Earth Science is the study of the Earth and its neighbors in space. It is an exciting science with many interesting and practical applications.
Earth scientists use their knowledge of the Earth to locate and develop energy and mineral resources. They also study the impact of human activity on Earth’s environment, and design methods to protect the planet.
There are four major branches of Earth science which are: geology, meteorology, oceanography, and astronomy. Let’s take a dive into these four aspects.
Geology – This involves the study of earth and all the processes occurring on it. Geologists search for fuels and minerals, study natural hazards, and work to protect Earth’s environment. They understudy material things like erosion, weathering, rocks and volcanos.
Oceanography – This is the study of the oceans. Here things like sharks, tides, water composition and hurricane are studied. Oceans cover most of our planet and are important for providing food resources and other commodities.
They are increasingly being used as an energy source to generate electricity such as we have in Kainji Dam in Nigeria. The oceans also have a major influence on the weather, and changes in the oceans can drive climate change.
Oceanographers work to develop the ocean as a resource and protect it from human impact.
Astronomy – This is the study of space, this includes galaxies, stars and planets. A knowledge of astronomy is essential to understanding the Earth.
Astronomers also uses the knowledge of Earth materials, processes and history to understand other planets – even those outside of our own solar system.
Meteorology – This is the study of the atmosphere and how processes in the atmosphere determine Earth’s weather and climate.
The change of climate over time in response to the actions of people is a topic of urgent worldwide concern. The study of meteorology is of critical importance in protecting the Earth’s environment.
The knowledge of earth science is increasingly very important for everyone to have.
We need to understand how the earth works and how we can protect the earth so we can live healthier lives.
